Puppies & Kittens
It's an exciting day when you bring your new puppy or kitten home for the first time! This cute, cuddly family member is exploring their new world, and probably making everyone around them smile.
Fun as this time may be, you should also do some housekeeping when it comes to health care in your new pet's first year of life.
Your vet will create a custom health care plan to meet your pet's unique needs during their first year, and provide you with lots of support and guidance along the way!
Your Pet’s First Appointment
When your puppy is around 6 weeks of age, they should come to our animal hospital for their first veterinary appointment. Kittens should visit us at about the 8-week mark.
During this initial appointment, your veterinarian will perform a complete physical examination to assess your pet's overall health, check for signs of congenital abnormalities, and look for external parasites.
Deworming medications for hookworms and roundworms will also be administered, along with the first round of puppy or kitten vaccinations. For kittens, we will take a blood test to check for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia.
Followup Appointments
Between the ages of 6 and 16 weeks, your pet should visit their veterinarian 3 to 4 times. These appointments allow our vets to check your puppy or kitten's overall health and to administer vaccines on schedule.
